As head contractor for this large project, Downer NZ Ltd partnered with Urban Effects to transform the public space in Don and Esk Streets. Involved from concept to detailed production and install, Urban Effects supplied the project with over 100 carefully selected furnishings, including seating, bike racks and stools.

To ensure safety and material quality, project engineers completed factory visits to evaluate product design at carefully spaced quality control hold points. Urban Effects’ project lead worked with site managers, Downer construction, to undertake a staged delivery approach enabling streamlined installation and safe site access.

This project had a high level of complexity given the following factors:
• Impact on local businesses
• Public interest
• Site safety due to location and large number of contractors
• Multi-contractor project, with Urban Effects key contacts being Isthmus Design, Downer, and Invercargill City Council.

Urban Effects worked in partnership with site management and Council, to keep local business owners and the public regularly informed of programme progress and any potential disruption.

Despite work being undertaken in the height of the Covid-19 health response in New Zealand, and the resulting material shortages internationally, the project was completed within three months of its projected finish date. This success was due to strong communication, pre-existing and stable supply chains, and proficient site management.

Downer were pleased with this work & completely satisfied with the end result meeting the desired result . Downer Group would highly recommend Urban Effects Ltd as a trusted partner on any further projects in the near future.

The seat that you sent us has been installed on the top of the bank at the Burt Sutcliffe Oval in Lincoln (a cricket ground that is used as an international training ground). It is being ‘dedicated’ next week as a memorial to an ex professor/avid cricket fan.  The comments I’ve had have all been very positive – everyone thinks it’s a great looking, and very comfortable seat.  So much so, that the crappy bench seats along the top of the bank along from this one, may need to be replaced as well – you may see some more orders coming your way….
