High Street, Christchurch Central
Creating a pleasant and safe place for pedestrians, drivers and cyclists while repairing the damage caused by earthquakes was the priority for Christchurch City Council in upgrading High Street.
As well as repairing the street and underground pipes, new speed limits, lighting, street furniture, trees, and plants have been added to the streetscape, designed with Matapopore to reflect Ngāi Tūāhuriri narratives and values.
The team from Logic Street Scene designed the colourful bespoke wooden platform benches from a concept plan provided by the Council, mirroring the aramoana pattern also used in the paving.
Designed by Ngāi Tahu carver and artist Fayne Robinson, ‘aramoana’ is Maori for ‘pathway to the sea’.
